It was risky. The including the 4e in model united nations (MUN) had never been tried. Were they mature enough to participate? How autonomous could we expect them to be? After all we only met for about 45 minutes a week and there was so much to cover! Plus there was the "problem" of speaking in front of a group of strangers once we were at the conference itself! Were they ready?? Finally the Monaco ISMMUN was a smashing success. The students rose to the occasion and had a great time. They did it! Bravo to all who participated, and thank you Mrs Galliot for preparing this groupe of 24 motivated and enthusiastic volunteers !

As part of their eco-awareness project and following the studying of the novel Unplugged, pupils of 5ème international held two formal debates in class, organised by their Language and Literature teacher, Mrs Llewellyn, and in front of their Head of Section, Mme Savary.

The motions of the two debates were:
  • DEBATE 1 : This House believes that it is a good idea to have a phone in holiday camp
  • DEBATE 2 : This House believes that social media helps you to socialize
The format used is a simplified version of British Parliamentary style debating in which a proposition teams supports a topic and an opposition team argues against it.
It requires the speakers to follow a strict set of codes and to use a formal register of speech. This activity helps students to
  • Put their knowledge into action
  • Have their own voice
  • Think on their feet and develop critical thinking
  • Develop persuasive speaking skills in preparation for activities such as MUN
The broader objective is to help the students become engaged citizens. Debating requires big questions to be viewed from different perspectives and in order to do this, students have to engage constructively with each other and collaborate.

The winners of the first annual 2nde Internationale debate (that took place last year 2021-2022) were finally able to pose for a picture with Lionel the Lion and their ‘Eloquent Lion Award’ certificate.
Using the British Parliamentary style debating format, they successfully defended their motion that ‘Money makes you happy’.
The 2022-2023 2nde Internationale Championship will start soon, starting with a first round of motions closely related to the set text Of Mice and Men by Steinbeck, then moving on to broader topics in the final rounds.
Thank you Mrs Llewellyn for organising such fruitful and enriching experiences !
